Pirate Knee Socks

September 19, 2006

I missed you too!!

I didn't realize I was gone so long, but the emails I've been getting state otherwise. uhhh, sorry for being out of touch. things have just been...busy!! you know it's a bad sign when you have to look at a calendar to figure out when you finished a pair of socks.

the knee-highs, they are finished!

pattern: toe-up knee highs following D's suggestions a la magic loop
yarn: one WHOLE hank of yarn pirate in hannah (also etsy shop)
needles: 2 mm knit picks classic circs
date started: 8.05.06
date finished: 8.19.06 (uhh I think, can't remember)

ok, so I still haven't resolved the shoes/skirt situation, but at least I have some kick ass socks! even though it hasn't been cold yet I have worn these around the house on a few occassions. perhaps there was some a/c sabotage involved, but I'll never tell.

the pattern: these fit perfectly, one of the pluses of toe up knitting. I kept trying it on as I went and found I needed a few more increase rounds than in Diana's 'recipe'.

the needles: umm, this is by second time knitting with knit picks needles but the first with this size. verdict - still kinda suck. this time there was a weird burr or scratch on one of the needles the yarn kept catching on. after a while it mysteriously stopped happening though I could still feel it. who knows. who cares. I'm over it.

the yarn: sure, I'm a little biased, but I wouldn't be if I didn't really love this yarn. it has three things I like in a yarn: it's skinny, tight and soft. (umm that sounds really weird) oh, and a fourth thing, great colors. I keep starring at the different shades and how some parts of the sock look wet. I'm interested in seeing how the yarn wears after actually wearing them with shoes and a few washings. I'll make sure to report back.

it's so sad, that's all I have after a month. sure, there are other socks on the needles, but do you want to see more socks? I am working on a sweater so I'll try to show that soon ie. when it doesn't look like a blob. I've also been collecting more sock yarns.

hello. I'm an addict. and I obviously have a few more knee highs in my future. oh and I have more coming my way from Kirsty's new venture. I've been drooling over her yarns for a while and was secretly hoping she would start selling some of them. of course I had to pounce once she did.

I promise not to be so absent! I already have a few blog posts planned for this week...so stay tuned!

sorry for the contrasty pic

thigh highs? I was just teasing...suckers!

actually, I probably wasn't. if I hadn't made it with two ounces I'm sure I would've kept on going. we'll just save that adventure for the next pair. for now I'm so ecstatic with my one little knee-high. I think I ended up increasing to 80 stitches and had enough yarn to knit a two inch cuff. as long as my scale isn't lying, I should have exactly enough for the second sock. I don't feel like tempting fate though, so I'll be taking georgia's offer on some extra yarn just in case (and to maybe make them a wee bit taller).

these socks are worrying me though. I don't think I have the right shoes or skirt for them. these are definitely going to be skirt socks, but you have to carefully balance the look with the right shoes. one direction takes you into, what I like to call, "looking like a fool" territory, while another can make you look like you're trying too hard. oh well, I guess this means I need to go shopping. I should probably knit knee-highs more often!

argh

it's obvious I have a problem, it seems all I can knit are socks. I can lie and say it's all I have time to knit, but I forfeited that excuse when I casted on for my fourth sock. yep, four socks. no, not two pairs of socks. four. seperate. socks.

we'll just focus on one today, some cara inspired knee-highs. I wanted to make the sock hop socks into knee socks, but I wasn't sure if I had enough yarn. ever since then I've been kinda obsessed, seeing them everywhere and talking about them all the time (just ask Illanna). finally this past weekend I started some socks with the new yarn pirate yarn, not really sure what pattern I was going to follow. I guess I never found out, so stockinette it is. then it became a 'how tall can I make these socks" challenge. I started with 4 ounces and so far I still have 2.6 ounces in the skein. will I be able to get to my knee with exactly half the yarn? I still have no idea. I'm scared that once I go beyond the 2 ounce limit I won't stop. thigh highs here I come!

hannah true colors

I'm pretty much in love with this yarn, it kinda reminds me of STR, with it's tight twist, but thinner and a little softer. I'm knitting with 2 mm's and started with a 60 stitch count. right now I'm at 72 stitches and I guess I'll increase two more times and decide what happens then.

notice the color I chose isn't pink? we're making headway in one battle over here!
