more gifts

while I work away on a new baby quilt, I thought I'd show you one of the other gifts I worked on during my little "hiatus". looking back, it seems like all I've been working on has been gifts lately and something about that makes me really happy. I've found that I love making unique things for my friends and that kids things top the list.

I made this bag for mazie's birthday in january. she originally wanted chocolate chip cookies, but I was afraid my cookies would arrive stale and ruin my reputation so I randomly decided she needed a messenger bag. she's really into princesses and pink right now, which gave me the perfect excuse to use up some of my far far away II fabric. I also used this as an excuse to simply make a messenger bag. I've been wanting one for myself and wasn't sure how hard it would be to make one and none of the patterns I've seen have been in shapes I like. so yeah, there were selfish reasons behind this.

combining fabrics for this bag was so fun. I used the sleeping princess and the purple moons from far far away II, along with some echino dots, a grey hemp/cotton blend, and organic cotton twill for the pockets. a pink cotton webbing completes the simple bag.

I didn't want the body of the bad to be too austere, so I added a little quilting, in pink of course. a little doodle stitching for the front, because I picture mazie carrying crayons and coloring books in her bag. for the back, a little message for my friend, so she knows there was love in each stitch.
