falling down the rabbit hole

it started simple enough. just chatting with a friend about fabrics and sewing.then it turned into a little obsession between us.

I kept dreaming about fabrics and quilts. nevermind that I've never made a quilt and haven't sewn in years. nevermind that I didn't even have a sewing machine in my possesion. I needed to quilt.

constantly being teased on flickr didn't help matters.

of course all I've been doing this week has been looking at fabrics online, ordering fabrics online, buying fabric locally, and asking for a sewing machine as a present. answering emails? yeah umm no.
I found a pattern that I figured would be easy enough to practice and small enough for instant gratification. we'll see about that!

there's still knitting around here though! I started a baktus scarf this week after so many enablers commented about it on a previous post. koigu + garter stitch = heaven.

WOW, what a color! Koigu's colors have definitely stolen my heart, I have so much Koigu in my stash that it's gotten ridiculous! What color number is that?? I think I need it . . .

How is it that Koigu has never ended up in my stash??!
Those colors are amazing.
Okay now quilting? Oh man...

Quilting is equally as wonderful as knitting.. (you should see how many huge plastic bins I have in my storage unit that are filled to the brim with treasured fabric.)
btw.. you CAN quilt totally by hand (ahem..) I made my first ever quilt totally hand sewn.
It takes longer, but is ever so gratifying (in a weird, snail-mode kind of way)

Welcome to the dark side. I also learned to make quilts by hand and those are good portable projects. I had to learn that after the baby because I couldn't find time to sit in front of the machine.

I love the cheery colours of your quilting fabrics. And of course the koigu..drool..

All of these pretty colors...I can't wait until you get a sewing machine!

The fabric is pretty, and the scarf is gorgeous! I definitely want to make one now (maybe in a purple/blue colorway?)

omg you can totally do it and I might make that doll quilt tomorrow night. At the retreat I sat with two of the designers for ModaBakeShop.com and they had such cute and simple projects with them!!!! Why can't you live closer? We could sew together and you could help me knit!!!! Also, you know this means I'm going to mail you some hexes right?

Yesss! Welcome to the quilting world :)

quilting! awesome. it seems like you should already be a quilter. Love the orangey reds you've chosen for the quilt.

The scarf looks great! I love the vibrancy of the colors (and can't believe that I still haven't knit with any koigu).
On the other hand, I'm carefully not looking at the quilting stuff. It's too easy for me to get sucked in even though I don't really do any sewing (have sewing machine with very little mileage on it). The beautiful fabrics and colors just make it so tempting even if I would never finish anything!

Heh. Welcome to yet another wonderful obsession. You'll be a natural quilter - you have that ability to pick out the right colors and the fabrics you've selected to put in your quilt are fabulous. I can't wait to see how things go with your first quilt and your new sewing machine!

Hooray for another quilter! Fabric shopping is so fun isn't it? :)

Lovely fabric and I adore that koigu and baktus. I just addedd that to my list of projects last week too!

wait...are those your Chinese coins? you're supposed to randomly choose them! It took me a long time to come to terms with random selection! I was laying them out in color-order...then had to stop.

There is a sewing bug/virus around. A faithful knitter I'm picking up fabric and entirely obsessed with sewing now. Good luck w/ your first quilt!

You should dream some Red Letter Day into your new collection!

That is such a coincidence! I just started making some quilts and love it! I have nothing OTN right now. Could it be knitting burnout for me?

Oooh, what pretty fabric. I especially love the big flowers with the blue in the middle. Who's it by?

what lovely fabrics you have chosen! I especially like the orange/blue ones. Would you mind sharing info about the fabrics? Designer and/or vendor? I am contemplating a couple of quilts but am having trouble finding prints (especially in orange!) that I really like. I love several of the ones you've chosen and any leads would be most appreciated!
No doubt your quilt will be splendid!

Aww, I've been trying so hard to avoid catching the quilting bug and now you're making me change my mind. I love the red/orange combo you've got going there - I may have to pinch that idea for a gender-neutral baby quilt...

It seems you've been afflicted by a bug so very dear to my heart...fabric buying urges....irrational idea's of capabilities...But crikey, if your quilts are anything like your knitting I shall stay tuned...

the yarn is a gorgeous colour! really love it. and i know what you mean about the quilting obsession, fabric is almost worse than yarn in some ways, because you have to match your fabric to all the other ones you have to buy..

oh i love that orange fabric. i am in kind of an orange phase at the moment so that might explain it. i've never tried quilting before, i will have to add it to my list of things to do before i die!
Posted by: sixtyfour | May 28, 2009 05:27 PM
That yarn IS heaven!! Good luck with the quilt, i have some of those fabrics in my stash.

I absolutely love the colors in the fabric. I have been collecting a bit too. But I still won't admit it. ;)
