first socks revisited

I love schedules and organization, so I can’t tell you how happy I am that lolly is taking care of socktoberfest. I mean, she got me to post twice in a month, that’s a feat right? (nevermind this is the second time I write this post…stupid computer)

When did you start making socks? Did you teach yourself or were you taught by a friend or relative? or in a class?
I actually started about a year ago, right before the first socktoberfest. Jen, my sp that summer, had sent me a skein of claudia handpainted and I figured, hey, what the hell! I just picked a pattern online and asked questions on the blog when I was lost. (thanks by the way!)

What was your first pair? How have they “held up” over time?
my first pair were from spun’s summer collection (btw, what happened to spun mag?). I figured with one skein that anklets would be the perfect thing and let’s not forget fast.

the first!

it’s almost embarrassing to look at these. I haven’t worn them since they sorta like maybe not fit. I’m not sure how neither sock is the right size and let’s not even talk about that hideous ribbing. the kicker? I found two dropped stitches on one of the toes. ouch! even without wearing these I can see some pilling (see below).

What would you have done differently?
not use dpns! uhh I mean, I would have used smaller needles, I used 2.75mm which is way too loose. I like knitting louets with 2.25mm for a nice squishy fabric.

What yarns have you particularly enjoyed?
yarntini, yarn pirate, tess, sock hop, and, after much bitching while knitting with it, str lightweight. I’ll admit it, I love my finished socks…there damnit!

Do you like to crochet your socks? or knit them on DPNs, 2 circulars, or using the Magic Loop method?
you really don’t want to see me with a hook. magic loop all the way, though I’ll use dpns….if all my other needles are “busy”.

Which kind of heel do you prefer? (flap? or short-row?)
either really, depends if I think about it while I’m knitting. short row heels are nice on the go since I don’t really have to think about it.

How many pairs have you made?
9 for me, 1 for sockpal, 1/2 a pair for a swap, and 2 on the needles. for some reason I feel like I’ve knitted more.

I remember the socks and the yarn! In fact watching you knit your first pair gave me the courage to knit my own first pair. I don’t remember them being different sizes though. πŸ™‚

I would have thought you’ve knit way more socks. They always looks so perfect, must be a natural talent. That first pair looks pretty good to me–at least it’s a pair! πŸ™‚

Great Socktoberfest post- thanks for sharing! It’s been fun answering these questions, and reading everyone else’s answers. I started my first pair just about a year ago, too! (And, I’m finally about to start my first pair of knee highs – woohoo!)

I feel like you’ve knit more socks than that too! I think of you as the sock master.

I felt the same way when I counted my socks – but then I decided it seemed like I’d knit more because there’s 2 in every pair. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
