one down

thigh highs? I was just teasing...suckers!
actually, I probably wasn't. if I hadn't made it with two ounces I'm sure I would've kept on going. we'll just save that adventure for the next pair. for now I'm so ecstatic with my one little knee-high. I think I ended up increasing to 80 stitches and had enough yarn to knit a two inch cuff. as long as my scale isn't lying, I should have exactly enough for the second sock. I don't feel like tempting fate though, so I'll be taking georgia's offer on some extra yarn just in case (and to maybe make them a wee bit taller).
these socks are worrying me though. I don't think I have the right shoes or skirt for them. these are definitely going to be skirt socks, but you have to carefully balance the look with the right shoes. one direction takes you into, what I like to call, "looking like a fool" territory, while another can make you look like you're trying too hard. oh well, I guess this means I need to go shopping. I should probably knit knee-highs more often!

Your sock is so cute. I think w/ a jean skirt and some Chuck Taylor All-Stars they will be a hit hands down!

brown suede high tops! and a blue or brown suede skirt... awesome socks!

Shit. We have to wear our knee highs OUT? I was thinking around the house in an old t-shirt and shorts.
The sock looks great. I LOVE IT!

Oooooh, I second the vote for the Chucks!
Posted by: Angela | August 14, 2006 05:41 PM
i have some doc marten mary janes on a chunky sole that would look cute with them.
but i would probably wear them with my dansko clogs and a long denim skirt.

OMG - CUTE!! That's it. I need knee highs. It's official!
Posted by: Nonnahs | August 14, 2006 06:05 PM
that is one awesome sock!
chucks, dansko/doc/born mary janes seem like they would all work and look cute... and dansko have these mary janes with a heel that look more dressy, if you want that. woo!

awesome! and the colors are terrific.
question -- I've always been a big knee-high girl but I've been hesitant to make a pair because I don't know how much yarn I'll need. What's your approx. yardage on that sock?
Posted by: jennie | August 14, 2006 06:24 PM
Your sock looks great. I have to get yarn for mine. I agree with the chucks. They'd look great with the socks.

Pretty! I have to say my patience for knee highs expired after my first pair. Oh yes they are cute, but take soooo loooong.
Posted by: Steph | August 14, 2006 06:44 PM
Love the knee highs! And that color, yum!
Posted by: Kirsten | August 14, 2006 07:59 PM
Very cool socks. I'm going to make some knee highs soon, too. :)

Rockin' socks! Those look amazing and I love them and I want to knit a pair for myself!
Posted by: Vickery | August 14, 2006 09:51 PM
Very cute!

Ok, so I was already smitten with knee highs and wondering about the shoe thing myself. Then (really just 20 minutes ago) I saw a girl in stripey knee highs, cargo shorts and...chucks! She rocked it out and caught me checking out her legs! I wasn't sure if it would be more embarrasing to let her think I was just checking her out or to admit I'm smitten with her socks!

Can't wait to see how you will accessorise these gorgeous knee socks.
Posted by: erin | August 14, 2006 11:04 PM
woo! those are awesome. I'm going to send the rest of the yarn tomorow. i think i'll start a pair in "culture club".
Posted by: georgia | August 14, 2006 11:20 PM
You know, if you have any trouble at all trying to figure out what to wear them with, I'd be delighted to take them off your hands@! :-) They're fabulous!!
I'd vote for a denim skirt and maryjanes

I can't wait to see your shoe choices, I was puzzling over the same thing. (Skirts too!) :)
Posted by: Aija | August 15, 2006 12:37 AM
Rock them with the miniest of micro mini skirts and a stiletto heel. I dare you.
Posted by: elizabeth | August 15, 2006 12:52 AM
Suede boots and suede skirt... sexy! Denim skirt would be hot too :)

I have been thinking the same thing about what to wear with my knee highs! (of course, you are a lot further than I am - 1/2 way there! I need more time to knit!!) The sock is quite wonderful. I can't wait to see the pair ;)

any excuse for new shoes works! I love the pooling at the top - a nice little extra!
Posted by: Stacey | August 15, 2006 08:57 AM
Awesome sock! I know the exact shoes for them, paired with a skirt, I am sending you an email with the link!
Posted by: Aja | August 15, 2006 09:32 AM
The fact that you can wear knee highs out at all is impressive. Hell would have to freeze over before any of mine saw the outside of a pair of jeans!
Posted by: Julia | August 15, 2006 09:54 AM
Well look at you. I drop off the face of the earth for a couple of weeks and you knit knee high socks. Genius. I need to knit some too (if that means I get to go shopping).
Posted by: Stephanie | August 15, 2006 12:41 PM
Awesome colorway - I love those!!
Posted by: Vicki | August 15, 2006 02:57 PM
I was just debating with myself if I could get away with knee high socks the other day. It's definitely one of those looks that can be totally rockin or totally dorky. Have you figured out what to wear them with yet?
Posted by: Sarah | August 15, 2006 03:02 PM
Ok, I guess I will accept no thigh highs for those kick ass knee highs!
I think chuck's or even the old school 3 eye doc martens with a jean skirt would rock!
Hmmm, I feel the urge to knit some knee highs coming on!

it's all about the chuck t's, yo. thst sock is super, super cute. i can't wait to see them modelled off.

Two questions:
1) How many yards were in those two ounces?
2) How long is your foot?
I have a largish foot, and am curious as to how much yarn I'd need to make a pair of knee-highs. Yours look great, by the way! I hope you find the right outfit to go with them. :)

They are just great!
Posted by: Sharon | August 16, 2006 06:57 AM
A shopping trip is definitely in order! How about a sweet pair of mary janes or a lovely little flat shoe?
Posted by: diana | August 16, 2006 09:58 AM
Very cute. This may not flaunt them enough for your liking, but I like to wear knee highs so they peek out over a pair of tall boots.
Posted by: Amy | August 16, 2006 09:06 PM
Awesome sock! I love knee highs but haven't had a cool pair in so long. Maybe knitting some for myself is the answer. :)
Good luck finding the perfect shoes!

ooh - teriffic-looking sock. Denim skirt and flat driving mocs - or kitten-heeled pumps :)
Posted by: eunny | August 17, 2006 06:33 PM
Wow, your socks are lovely! I like how the colors knits up- randomly distributed most of the way. But I REALLY like your dragon skin sock below- the color with the pattern is fabulous!

Posted by: georgia | August 18, 2006 10:56 PM
WOW! That is one tall sock. You've got more patience than I do. It looks great!
Posted by: Chrissy | August 19, 2006 09:44 AM
It looks great!! Knit knee-highs more often so you have to buy more skirts and shoes?? ;)

So. You've developed a knee-high obsession...in August. Someone's looking forward to cooler temps!

Your knee high looks great, and I really love the Dragon Skin socks as well. Quite a lot of valuable suggestions in these comments for how to wear handknitted socks! I should bookmark this page as a reference :)
