I was out of town …

and all I have is one FO to show you.

yarn: yarntini fingering weight in pureknits
pattern: madder ribbed socks
needles: 2.25mm dpns
date started: 5.10.06
date finished: 5.28.06

I’ve gushed over this yarn plenty of times so you already know how much I LOVE it! I finally took the time to finish the second sock this weekend while we drove down to savannah. my grand plan was to finish all the socks on my wip list. I’m a daydreamer you can say. or a fool. yep, definitely one of those. I didn’t count on dropping two needles under the seat (reason #53 in the anti-dpn manifesto), going around everywhere with my parents, or the scorching southern heat beating down on me. I only managed to work on the sock while in the car (once I found the needles), the hotel, or at an ice cream shop while sucking down a milkshake. anyway, I pretty much followed the pattern as written except for the toe, where I knit till I was two inches away from finishing (as opposed to three) and removed half the plain knit rounds.

these socks fit perfectly and the colors make me smile. what else could I ask for? oh yeah, the stripes matching perfectly in each sock. how often does that happen?! and I still have 1.5 ounces left of this yarn! I can’t wait till fall to wear these all the time. I’m so sad the cool weather we’ve been having just disappeared, I hate, haaaaate, the summer. I become a total shut-in, hiding from the humidity and heat and racking up our electricity bill. how else am I supposed to knit?

or spin?! I finally broke out my spindle again, getting ready for a spinning class in two weeks (I don’t want them to think I totally suck) and I’m loving it. steph’s hand blended batts are amazingly soft and beautiful. I’ve had fun just drafting the rest of the fiber after I spun some of it up. I’m pretty excited about how this yarn will look so this will be my little project for the rest of the week along with finishing up the last few rounds of a hat for a certain someone and finishing up a baby sweater that I haven’t mentioned.

  • jillian May 30, 2006 at 6:58 pm

Those socks are SO cute and that picture of your spindle-in-progress is incredible!

  • amanda May 30, 2006 at 7:28 pm

What a great pic of your spindle! And your socks are wonderful — it is such a simple pattern but I love it sooo much.
I don’t do heat or humidity well either and our electricity bill is seriously cutting into my fiber fun money.

the socks look like the official bitterpurl socks –the colors are wonderful and match your blog perfectly. looks like your purple kick is now a pink kick.

  • Leah May 30, 2006 at 7:49 pm

I love love love the way those socks turned out!! Perfect I say!

  • Angela May 30, 2006 at 8:02 pm

Awesome! I love them too! One thing about the patterns in that book is that I can’t quite seem to get the toes done in that book as written. I usually end up having to knit for a bit more before starting the toe decreases.. waah. But congrats on finishing!

Those socks are divine – I can’t think of a more Yahaira colorway!

    I love that colorway! Gorgeous!

  • Julsey May 30, 2006 at 10:15 pm

That self striping puts other striping yarns to shame. The A-B-C-B-A idea is catching on as “the way to self stripe”…way to be the first kid on the block with an FO!

  • erin May 30, 2006 at 10:30 pm

So pretty, reminds me of the neapolitan ice cream that my kids buy so that there’s a fave flavour for everyone.

  • kris May 31, 2006 at 3:18 am

mmmm, pretty socks! i can look after them until winter for you; none of that nasty summer heat here 😉

  • yuvee May 31, 2006 at 3:43 am

  • yuvee May 31, 2006 at 3:45 am

  • Annarella May 31, 2006 at 4:32 am

Gosh, it’s been soooo long! Have just got round to updating your link on my site and also linked to your shop 🙂 I gather that’s been going pretty well, I’m so excited for you.
I totally agree with you on how pointless, sticky and infuriating hot summers are… roll on autumn I say 🙂
    Spk soon xxx

  • hege May 31, 2006 at 9:09 am

I love the socks! So happy and cheery. I want to make some! 🙂 I do love summer, but it’s definitely not good for knitting 🙁

  • Stacey May 31, 2006 at 9:17 am

Cute socks! Nice job on matching the stripes! (intentional or not!) – ugh – humidity…..I don’t mind the heat, I just hate when I feel like I have to swim through air! 🙂

  • Stephanie May 31, 2006 at 10:53 am

They’re perfect. I love the different widths of the stripes and that matchiness just makes my anal heart smile! I’m going to have to try some of that fiber with my next order. Looks so yummy.

  • gleek May 31, 2006 at 10:55 am

heh, i’m the opposite. i finally come out and start doing things in the summer! during the winter i hibernate.
the socks turned out lovely!! i can’t believe how the stripes matches up so perfectly. that’s truely amazing.

  • Liz May 31, 2006 at 11:52 am

Great socks… they are like the colours of my sister’s favorite icecream – Harlequin, Neopolitan, one of those…
Ughh humidity, yuck, thus I live on the left coast… no more Boston summers I say.

  • j a r e d May 31, 2006 at 12:01 pm

i’m right there with you. HATE the summer. i never used to, then i moved to the east coast and discovered humidity. and how it does not mix well with wool. good thing i got my tax return back, it will buy me a summer of AC….

  • Lolly May 31, 2006 at 12:29 pm

Your socks are so beautiful! The absolutel embodiment of Bitter Purl blog! 🙂
I miss the west so much when east coast summers roll around. I hate humidity!

  • aquaknits May 31, 2006 at 1:10 pm

The socks turned out just perfect! Your spinning looks much better than my (one and only so far) attempt. Good luck with your class!

  • brooke May 31, 2006 at 1:20 pm

I hate the summer too! Those stripes are awesome.

  • Joelene May 31, 2006 at 1:33 pm

Love them! Can I have them? Just thought I would check…

  • Casey May 31, 2006 at 2:27 pm

Those socks are so cheerful! They make me smile. I know what you mean about the summer. I’ve been thinking about knitting some socks but I want to be able to wear them when I’m done! I don’t want to wait for months.

  • Alyson May 31, 2006 at 4:50 pm

Oooh, and that’s the batt I just ordered from you too…goodie!
Perfect stripes…you’ve obtained the handknit sock Holy Grail. I bow.

  • the knitchick May 31, 2006 at 10:30 pm

love your socks! the colourway is just gorgeous. x

  • reesie May 31, 2006 at 11:49 pm

love the socks! esp how the stripes matchy match. somehow i never care about that! the matchy stripes make it look like something you bought and not made (meant as a compliment).

  • Amy June 1, 2006 at 7:29 am

Nice! The stripes worked out so perfectly in that colorway. They look adorable on you.

  • Ariane June 1, 2006 at 7:32 am

    Purdy socks….purdy fibers:o)

  • elizabeth June 1, 2006 at 12:07 pm

Ohh love the socks! Where are you taking a spinning class?

  • keohinani June 1, 2006 at 6:57 pm

your socks are awesome! i can hardly wait for the new colors to come out! this stuff is soooo dreamy!!! i like to use exclamation marks!!!!!!
but no, seriously, i couldn’t stand it anymore; i wound up the gimlet yarntini i purchased and have NOT been able to put it down! (i guess my other socks will just have to wait…) oh, and FYI: the striping goes light blue, green, light blue, dark blue; and all the stripes are about the same size. yummy! i’ll post a picture of it…when i manage to put it down long enough. mmmm….sock yarn….

  • melissa June 1, 2006 at 11:11 pm

i can’t believe how perfect those stripes are. and the colors? …just perfect!

  • obsidiankitten June 4, 2006 at 5:35 am

oh, by the way, in case no one told you, spinning is completely addictive. i started spinning classes last november with my mom and my 88-year-old grandmother, and i loooove to spin. (and once i had yarn, i had to learn to knit, now my second new addiction)
I may soon be starting Fiber Compulsives Anonymous meetings in my area. 😉

  • the kitchener bitch June 19, 2006 at 10:29 pm

those socks are fabulous! those are my favorite colors right now. I have total sock envy.

  • Tendy June 23, 2006 at 1:57 pm

I have a question about sock yarns . . . using 100 percent merino, such as this, how long can one reasonably expect the sock to last? My experience with pure merino wool socks is that they fall apart quickly. Thoughts?
