randomness

why didn’t anyone tell me I woulnd’t get a chance to knit this weekend? I obviously had no idea that someone else’s wedding could take so much of my time. I worked on the sunrise circle jacket a bit on the drive up and down, but it pretty much looks the same…not new picture worthy I’m afraid. I did get to work on my pink cashmere sock on the train from long island to manhattan*, but again….not new picture worthy. so let’s move on to a random post:
I can tell you that the whole weekend was filled with me wishing I had knitted a shawl, a blanket, something. on the drive up the weather was around 80 degrees, but once we got out of the car the sun was fading and eventually the temps dropped to about 45 degrees with rain the whole weekend. no one had packed for this. all I had was my wimpy river stole, who’s sole purpose was to shed all over my black dress and to start looking like a drowned rat in the rain. can someone remind me to knit a few wraps this summer, that aren’t gifts?!
*have you ever walked the streets of harlem, at night, in the cold rain, wearing a dress, with jeans, with flip-flops, and a wet mohair stole along with a guy in a suit and a guy in khakis and a shirt? twice? I have. not fun. eventually you stop worrying about how ridiculous you must look and start focusing on trying to miss every puddle between 141st and 135th street and wondering how quickly frost bite starts to take effect. ahh, the things you will do for your boyfriend and his friends.
I’m pretty behind* on this month’s project spectrum, yellow and orange are pretty hard to find in this house. I think twice in my life I have bought something in either color, though I’m not sure what that says about me. no worries though, my mind is already on next month’s color: green. it’s hard not to be when you get a fat hank of yarn like this:

appletini.jpg

430 yds of stripey goodness. I’m pretty excited about trying this yarn out for the store and making some jaywalkers for myself…finally. I do have another project idea for green, but Jared is egging me on to knit an awesome cardigan like his. I’m weak, so we’ll see which project wins out. I have four days to decide, plenty!
till then, I have yet another yarn I get to play with:

alpacawool.jpg

notice it’s not yellow, orange, or green. it’s an alpaca/wool blend and it’s unbelievably soft. it knits at an aran gauge and I have about 100yds to try out, any pattern suggestions?
*’pretty behind, as in I haven’t done jack for it.

I love the green yarn – I can’t wait to see how it knits up. You wanna wonder about frost bite, come to Wyoming where it was 30 degrees this morning.

Why don’t you knit up a swatch for nikki shell’s installation? For her new lounge? test out the yarn and be part of the display!
    I covet that yarn!

What is that pink and green stripey goodness? Can I have it?!

  • Steph April 26, 2006 at 4:36 pm

I gotta be ruthless here but I just want to know about the new yarn (though that green-pink stripey is very pretty)! You could knit a cover for a hot-water bottle to take along on your next trip 😉

Ooo, that will make pretty Jaywalkers! What is the yarn, by the way?

You were up here? Awesome. My bestfriend lives on W138th. I’m glad your site likes my sidekick. Now I can’t post comments when I’m surfin’ on it.

When I clicked on Bitter Purl in my bloglines, I thought “who is Bitter Purl and where can I get that green and pink yarn IMMEDIATELY?” Then it said “By Yahaira.” Oh. Duh. Don’t change your blog anymore because you are confusing your poor Arizona friends (me, not stephanie). So next month is green, eh? I think I can follow along with that project spectrum color. So uh, can I buy that green yarn now?

  • Chris April 26, 2006 at 6:26 pm

Oh, that will make lovely Jaywalkers for you!
I got a chill just reading about your weekend. Brrrr!

  • Illanna April 26, 2006 at 6:26 pm

I noticed that other people in the comments want your yarn. Let it be known that I will give my first born child + $500 + my entire stash for that skein of yarn. I’m just sayin.

  • Amy April 26, 2006 at 6:50 pm

I think you should give me that yarn to try to lure me into the evils of sock knitting. It could be gateway sock yarn.
P.S. We need photos of you in your new dress! (wet stole=optional)

Yum!! That green yarn is gorgeous! What is it?

  • Saleknitter April 26, 2006 at 7:36 pm

You were in my neck of the woods..up in Harlem. Small world after all! Love the alpaca/wool blend. Have you checked out the book One Skein? Perhaps you can get some ideas from the book.

Like everyone else is saying…that pink and green yarn is fabulous. I’m not even going to ask what yarn it is, because I need to back away from the pink and green yarn.

I love the green and pink stripe yarn. Yummy!
Yep, weddings do take a lot of time, even if you aren’t a major part of it. I learned that the hard way by my three weddings that I was in last year. Uh-huh… I’m done with weddings. Oh yes I am.

  • Allegra April 26, 2006 at 11:45 pm

I want the pink and green yarn toooooooo!!!!

  • carrie m April 27, 2006 at 1:13 am

ouch, saturday night was a PAINFUL day to be in the city. ironically, i was wearing my ella shawl while out in a park covering a murder. (don’t ask.) i was soaked, but it provided more protection than the river stole.
i’m not going to compliment the green and pink yarn because it’s going to get a big head!

  • Michelle April 27, 2006 at 9:21 am

I am just chiming in…pink and green are my thing right now…i must have that sock yarn

  • Stacey April 27, 2006 at 9:25 am

The pink and green reminds me of preppy days of ‘ol…It will make some great Jaywalkers! I could have warned you about the wedding thing – sometimes, I think my friends weddings took more of my time than my own! 🙂

  • Lolly April 27, 2006 at 10:53 am

The yarn is so beautiful. I think I need it… those colors are my faves! (just add a touch of brown!)
Can I tell you a secret? Next month can’t come fast enough for me either… I see the beauty in orange and yellow, but green – how I love it!!
Sorry to hear about the bad weekend experiences 🙁

  • Aja April 27, 2006 at 3:35 pm

It was a nasty weather on the east coast last weekend wasn’t it? I was inside while it poured the entire time, sorry you were outside walking the city streets. No, that doesn’t sound fun. But that gorgeous yarn could turn around any day, its delicious!

  • Casey April 27, 2006 at 4:14 pm

That green yarn is so beautiful!! Sorry to hear your river stole wasn’t very functional.

  • memeeflye April 27, 2006 at 7:02 pm

What kind of yarn is the green yarn? I really like the colors.
